There is no question that Christmas is rooted in ancient pagan traditions and Jesus Christ was not born on December 25th. Historically, Christmas was not observed until the 5th century when the Western church ordered the feast to be celebrated on the day of the Mithraic rites of the birth of the sun and at the close of the Saturnalia. There was no actual definitive day known to the church, when Jesus Christ was born. The first time Christmas was designated to be marked on December 25th came in the second century. Unofficial Christmas celebrations began as a reaction to the Roman Saturnalia, which was a harvest festival that marked the winter solstice—the return of the sun, which honored Saturn, the Roman god of sowing. Saturnalia was a time of drunkenness and sexual revelry in 529 A.D. after Christianity was made the official state religion of the Roman Empire. Emperor Justinian made it an official holiday. By the medieval period it had become a time of drinking, sexual indulgence and partying of every kind and nothing to do with a celebration of the birth of Christ. In many ways, this is similar to the Christmas holidays of America where drinking and sexual promiscuity are indulged in at office parties and homes.
