Elisabeth Koll, Associate Professor of Modern Chinese History, recently returned from a year in China where she researched her current book project on the social history of the Chinese railroad between the 1890s and the 1960s.

Focusing on Chinese perceptions of new transportation options, the emergence of the modern tourism business, the promotion of patriotic travel destinations and the targeting of the new middle-class, especially women, in the booming print culture of the time will be explored.
