Sent: Friday, January 06, 2012 9:07 AM To: Brian J. Cummins Subject: Cleveland Public Power Waste-to-to Energy project - EPA air-quality permit hearing - Mon. 1/9/2012 This message is to inform you that there is an Ohio EPA Public Hearing on Cleveland’s gasification facility air permit that is being held this coming Monday, January 9, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Estabrook Recreation Center, 4125 Fulton Road, Cleveland.
Note that I am opposed to this project and will be opposing the issuance of the air permit for this project. Other organizations that join me in my opposition and concern include: Environmental Health Watch, Earth Day Coalition, Ohio Citizen Action, NE Ohio Sierra Club Coal and Energy Committee, and the Center for Health Environment and Justice.
If you are unable to review the enclosed information (listed below), please know that this meeting on Monday is to take public comment on an air permit the City is requesting be approved for a Solid Waste to Municipal Energy gasification plant, which has been proposed to utilize a proprietary technology developed in Japan, that has never been commercially utilized in the U.S. to the scale being proposed by the City. The new facility would be built at the city’s current Ridge Road Transfer Station located at 3727 Ridge Road.
The project in its entirety is complex, both technologically and as a purported comprehensive waste management and energy generation project. The bottom line for the meeting on Monday though, is that the proposed project would emit additional toxic emissions to our air and would have a direct impact on the environment and health of the areas in close proximity to the plant, i.e., Cleveland neighborhoods of Old Brooklyn, Brooklyn Centre, Stockyard, Clark-Fulton, Tremont, Detroit Shoreway, West Blvd, and the City of Brooklyn. It should also be said that the environmental and health impacts would also reach additional population centers in the Greater Cleveland area such as Cleveland, Shaker and University Heights etc...
Although Monday’s hearing is specifically related to the air permit for the gasification waste-to-energy facility, opposition to this project is not based solely on air pollution and health impacts. I’ll be following-up later on today with a more complete rational for my overall opposition as well as alternatives to this proposal.
