Celebrate the Region's Newest Waterfront Park - Wendy Park at Whiskey Island Come celebrate this historic event and show your support to for our waterfront, parkland, public access marina and historic Coast Guard Station on Whiskey Island! 2 pm - 3 pm: Self-guided walking tour of Wendy Park to the River Boardwalk. 3 pm - 4 pm: Gather at the River Boardwalk to hear our invited speakers, and friends of our waterways and greenspace, share their visions for Whiskey Island: County Commissioner- Jimmy Dimora, County Planning Commission Director- Paul Alsenas, and County Planning Commission Special Projects Manager- Tim McCormack. The Friends of Whiskey Island's Ed Hauser will discuss the restoration of the parkland, the future of the historic Coast Guard Station and Hulett Ore Unloaders, the continued threat of losing our parkland and public access marina, and the new campaign for the Cleveland Metroparks to acquire and operate the county's Whiskey Island Property. In 2003, the City of Cleveland acquired the Cleveland Harbor Coast Guard Station, a designated Cleveland Landmark. In 2004, Cuyahoga County acquired the 20-acre Whiskey Island parkland and the 10-acre public access marina for continued public access and recreation. In June 2005, Wendy Park at Whiskey Island was dedicated. The initial cleanup and restoration efforts of the parkland, the only natural shoreline in downtown Cleveland, and River Boardwalk are complete. At RiverDay 2002, the Friends of Whiskey Island hosted the first organized celebration of our waterfront at the mouth of the river, on Whiskey Island. RiverDay 2006 will be a historic celebration where the people will finally celebrate the ownership, rights, title, and interest to recreate where our American Heritage River greets our Great Lake - Wendy Park and Whiskey Island Marina. Meet at Whiskey Island Marina- West Shoreway (Rt.2) to the Edgewater Park exit, take a right turn at the first road and follow signs. Free. No reservations. All ages. Dress for the weather. Bring picnics, kayaks, volleyballs, cameras and binoculars.
