Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon will be the guest of Cleveland Public Library’s Writers and Readers Series, Sunday, April 15,at 2:00 p.m. Free and open to the public, the event will take place at the Main Library, Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium, E. 6th Street and Superior Avenue.

Chabon emerged on the literary scene with his first novel, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh , which was originally written for his master’s thesis at UC Irvine and became a national bestseller. His second novel, Wonder Boys , about a frustrated novelist, also reached bestseller status and was made into a film starring Michael Douglas and Tobey McGuire. But it was his third novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay , which depicts an illustrator and writer in the comic book world of the 1930's and 40's, that won him fame and the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, among other notable awards.

Majorie Williams, Director of Education, The Cleveland Museum of Art, lectures at the CMA as part of the Monet Lectures series accompanying the exhibition "Monet in Normandy". This lecture is free, open to the public and in the Recital Hall.

The result of such out-migration, and downright defection, as is the case with all the other members of Bone, is the subject of a series of art exhibitions and related events taking place over the next month, all over town... which event sponsor Kent Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) introduces by pointing out: "In 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that Cleveland had lost nearly 20,000 residents in just five years. The city’s population of 458,684 was the lowest in nearly one hundred years." While I don't really care for the Cleveland Institute of Art slogan "Making Art Work" (to me, work is a 4-letter-word, and art is not), the CIA turns out some of the hardest working and most work-force attractive designers in the world, and each year showcases their talent at an annual Design Show. To get a sense of what to expect, here is my preview of the show from 2005 (missed the 2006 show - will be there this year!).

A unique opportunity to explore a piece of Cleveland’s lakefront - As part of an ongoing process to promote an appreciation and stewardship for Cleveland’s ecological systems and natural resources, the Dike 14 Environmental Education Collaborative will sponsor the:Cinco de Mayo Migration at Gordon State Park area of Cleveland Lakefront State Park (E. 72 St. and N. Marginal). Last hike begins at 11:00 AM and ends at noon.

The Joseph McCullough Center will be bursting with energy and excitement as the Institute’s graduating seniors challenge the public with fresh ideas and commentaries on our world. Work will be presented in all media including performance and installation art. The senior thesis project is the culmination of a student’s career at the Institute. Please join us to celebrate their achievements!

Exhibition Hours

The May 2007 meeting of the North East Ohio Newbie Linux Users Group (NEON LUG) will be meeting this Thursday (May 9th 2007) and is informal and no offical presentation will be made.

RiverSweep is Ohio Canal Corridor's 18th Annual, environmental awareness and clean-up initiative developed by Ohio Canal Corridor. The event partners multiple non-profit organizations with private companies to clean areas along the Cuyahoga River Valley and its tributaries. RiverSweep is a "done in a day" event where volunteers gather at one of seven designated areas.

May 14th at 7:00 Mayor Frank Jackson and Cleveland City Council will honor us by holding a City Council Meeting in the neighborhood.  Josaphat Arts Hall ( 1433 E. 33rd Street ) will host the meeting.  This is our chance to see decision making in action right here in our neighborhood.  Please join this meeting.
